Band combines Memphis soul with Creole heritage in Wilson Music Series performance

WILSON, Ark.,––On Saturday, May 21, Marcella & Her Lovers will play at the Grange at Wilson Gardens at 7 p.m. as a part of the Wilson Music Series. More information and tickets can be found on

Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, Marcella Simien describes her music as “Swamp Soul”, combining Memphis soul with her Louisiana heritage. Brian Dempsey, creative/brand director for Wilson, approached the band because its distinctive sound is a perfect fit for the Wilson Music Series.

“Marcella & Her Lovers’ unique sound that combines elements from rock ‘n’ roll, Memphis soul music and her Creole heritage will draw audiences from Wilson and the surrounding areas,” Dempsey said.

Simien is the daugher of two-time Grammy winner Terrance Simien and has performed with his band at events such as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the Rhythm & Blues Cruise. She said watching her dad first sparked her interest in becoming a professional musician.

“I wanted to be on stage to connect with people more than anything,” she said. “And that’s still my goal when I get on stage. Seeing my dad and other artists perform made me realize it was possible.”

Now an artist in her own right, Simien has shared the stage with artists such as Taj Mahal, Susan Cowsill, Al Gamble (of St. Paul & the Broken Bones), Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Susan Marshall, and others. Marcella & Her Lovers were recently named one of the top 10 must-hear Memphis Originals by The Memphis Music Hall of Fame and nominated for a USArtist Fellowship.

Marcella & Her Lovers EP “The Bronze Age” is now available online. A full length album is expected to be released by the end of the year. More information can be found on the band’s website,
